The other day I was looking through my DVD collection, trying to find something to watch while I was cleaning up my house. I started to reminisce about the great TV shows that were on back in the day, and some of the characters that I miss seeing on a weekly basis. So, I thought it would be fun to list some of the characters that I love, past and present. I’m only going to list one person per show, so some of them might not be the obvious choice. The characters listed below are not necessarily my favorite on their show, but they all have a special place in my heart.
Daryl Dixon (The Walking Dead) played by Norman Reedus. Hands down, Daryl is my favorite character on The Walking Dead. He is person numero uno on my fantasy zombie fighting squad (oh, that would be a really good post — My Zombie Team. I’ll have to remember to do that.). Why do I like Daryl so much? Because he is a survivalist — he knows his stuff! Plus, he is mega-sexy, so that doesn’t hurt. Of course, he has his baggage (don’t we all), but the guy has heart. Plus, he will tell you exactly what he thinks.
Castiel (Supernatural) played by Misha Collins. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Winchester brothers (Dean slightly more than Sam). I’m listing Castiel here because I absolutely love every episode that he is in. The fact that he has been announced as a series regular for next season has me giddy! I love the bond that he and Dean share and I hope that they strengthen that in future episodes. Castiel is an angel who has been to hell and back. He has made some epic mistakes, but he always bounces back — eventually. He tries to do his best at balancing what is right for himself, the Winchesters, Heaven, and the human race.
Dr. Temperance Brennan (Bones) played by Emily Deschanel. I started watching Bones after several seasons had already aired. The show was recommended by some family members. I usually don’t like procedural shows like Law and Order or CSI, so I was reluctant to give the show a try. But, I’m glad that I did because I’ve watched every episode since. Temperance ‘Bones’ Brennan is a world-renowned forensic anthropologist who works for the Jeffersonian Institute. She is extremely literal and doesn’t really grasp the concept of normal human interaction. I love her character’s progression and how she changes based on the relationships she develops with the other members of the Jeffersonian team, as well as FBI agent Seely Booth.
Jayne Cobb (Firefly) played by Adam Baldwin. Jayne is a mercenary who signs on with Captain Malcolm Reynolds and the crew of Serenity. He gives off the vibe that he is only looking out for himself, but I believe he does view his crew as family (even River). He is a shoot-first-ask-questions-later kind of guy. He is a physically imposing guy who isn’t known so much for his brain. My favorite Jayne-centric episode is “Jaynestown” because it not only shows his gruff side, but it shows his softer side as well. Plus, the episode is just really funny.
Anya (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) played by Emma Caulfield. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of my all-time favorite TV Shows. I’ve watched the complete series (7 seasons) at least 5 times and some episodes, even more than that. All of the characters are near and dear to my heart but I could only choose one for this list. Anya was a great character, who was often the comic relief. She became a vengeance demon after turning her cheating boyfriend into a troll. Many, many years later she lost her powers after a run in with the Scooby gang, of which she later became a part. So, what scares a fearless vengeance demon? Bunnies, of course!
Lt. Karl C. ‘Helo’ Agathon (Battlestar Galactica) played by Tahmoh Penikett. Again, this show is one of my favorites and I had a lot of characters to choose from. The character that I liked right from the start was Helo. He is someone with a distinct belief in what is right and what is wrong, and he is willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice for what he believes in. This character was only supposed to be part of the miniseries, but when the series was commissioned, his character was so popular with the audience that they decided to continue his story. And, what a story it was. Helo fell in love with a humanoid cylone (Boomer) and together they had the first human/cylone baby. Sometimes, you’ve just got to love a “Happily Ever After,” especially if it takes a lot of heartache to get there.
Well, those are some of my favorite characters. What are some of yours? List them in the comments below.
